Go down the stairs between the Coal Hole pub and the Savoy Hotel, and you'll see a rather mundane-looking gas lamp. London has 1500 working gas lamps, but this one is unique. It's the only sewer-powered streetlight in the city.

The Coal Hole in London Nicholson’s Pubs
If you head down the steps by The Coal Hole pub you'll find Carting Lane, a narrow street sloping down towards the Thames. On it, you'll find a relic of the Victorian era, a stocky gas lamppost. These aren't as rare in London as you might think, so it's worth keeping an eye out. I've written about the historical street furniture here.

The Coal Hole occupies a corner of the Savoy Building, designed by Thomas Collcutt. It was in the basement of the pub's former incarnation that the Wolf Club was founded, by actor and lush Edmund Kean. Supposedly a place where hen-pecked husbands could enjoy a sing-song, its real role was less innocent, and involved heavy drinking and loose women.
